Consmiles joins LH.ie

Postby consmiles on Wed Jun 17, 2009 12:10 pm

Hi all,
my name is Con Connor and I'm into most aspects of medieval living history battle reenactment and so on for over six years now.
With my partner Niamh, I live near Castlerea, Co Roscommon on a 16 acre farm. We have begun to build a 1 acre moated Rath based on the Gothic Palais built in 1270 at Cloonfree by Aodh O Conchubhair. I specialise in medieval leather craft - shoes, helms, armour, belts and bags for all periods (dont forget the Romans). I'm building a new group up here called "Castlerea Warriors" and we seek to present as Gael 1000 to 1300. I hope to present a website for the group and a second one for my leather craft soon.
I have taken my time to join this forum as I am very busy with home building and our new group and other activities so I may only post occasionally. I know many re-enactors in Ireland and hope to know more of you in person. This is a great hobby that I always believe should be fun first with safety as a basis for all actions. Respect to the mod team for their dedication.
Regards
Con

Greetings Con,

I am very new as well (just joined viewtopic.php?f=3&t=965 together with my wife and 2 kids ) and we actually as well want to do a Gael presentation, around the 11th century, but we are not 100% sure on that yet. We did "continental" style in Germany for around 6 years quite passionate. We got a lot of very cordial messages from several members of this forum immediately after we have posted our thread. Really great forum so far I can say, the mods seem really to be eager to keep it clean from spam and chit chat. ;)
We are highly interested in your project of building the rath. In what kind of sociological and historical context will you put this reconstruction? What kind of sources did you use? Will you do event there? Really interested!
Looking forward to meet u at the next event which will hopefully take part in very soon and talk to you personally.

Greetings,

Niko

Hi Con (from Con)
and
Hi Niko also (from Con)

OK - Templar Commander we need to talk about naming names.... I've always been known as Con and I bet you have too. A dilemma for us both. If I convert to 'Con the Greater' due to my conservative modesty then you automatically become "Con the lesser" .... Your other option is to name the type of sword you would like to be dispatched with... (note I am having fun already).

To Niko and Sarah,
thank you for your posting. The 'sociological and historical context' of Cloonfree is that of a Gaelic Prince building a Gothic Palais when nearby Norman Lords were hiding inside their stone built castles. The Palais has two praise poems which describe its construction using x-forcis or large bent oak beams with a heavy thatch and wattle and daub walls. This is a combination of native and foreign building styles. Serious shortage of huge oak bent beams around here today so a practical compromise is being evaluated. On a Archaeology Diploma course we visited Cloonfree with Kieran O'Connor (who like myself is connected to the O'Connor line) and had an hour long lecture on site which I had videotaped. Gaelic nobles of the 1200's displayed their wealth by constant distribution with their people. We will do events here but not to the general public. Last year we had our first medieval tournament - a live weapons target tournament won by Peter. See image attached. This year on the 25 and 26 July we have our second medieval tournament and we will extend the activities to include archery with the live javelins, axes and daggers. We call it the "Lughnasa Games" and I will post more info on this in the Event page. Thanks for making contact.
Regards
Con
