[Req] Irish “Comeback” ries

Postby FrCrilly on Thu Jun 04, 2009 4:58 pm

Hi All,

In this present era of doom and gloom, I’m looking for stories involving Irish people throughout history who have made remarkable comebacks. So far I have come up with the following 3 individuals. Can I ask any history enthusiasts out there if they can suggest any others?

Thanks In Advance for all responses.

1. Stephen Roche’smeback against Pedro Delgado at La Plagne in the 1987 Tour De France in which Roche effectively sealed the tour itself.

(See youtube sports footage and retrospective interview by Roche

2. Johnny Logan’s cback from the “one hwonder” wilders to become the first (and only) person to win the Eurovision Song Contest twice, also in 1987.

3. Charlie Haughey’s climb b to the top of Fianna Fail to become Taoiseach in 1979 after the Arms Trial of 1970 almost ruined his political career.

(Haughey Documentary: Episode 2).

There was a King of Leinster (or was it Offaly) that held his enemies at bay for many years. When he died his enemies came together after about a year to invade. The Leinster men dug the old king up and strapped him to a board and carried him shoulder high into battle. when his enemies saw him come over the hill to the battlefield they turned and fled.

There's a re-enactment senario in there...worst hang-over gets strapped to the board :P

no matter what happens, we just keep coming back?

From the historical point of view, the GREATEST comeback of all time has to be Lazuru(if you believe evrything you read in the Bible)

Thanks for all responses.

I’ve just thought of another one. Ken Doherty’sazing comeback at the 2003 World Snooker semi final against Paul Hunter. Doherty trailed 15 frames to 9, with winner being first to 17. In snooker terms, it was almost inconceivable that a player could put moral defeat aside and find the mental strength to comeback and win. However Doherty won the final session 8-1, to beat Hunter 17-16. Doherty went on to lose the final to Mark Williams, however 2003 became known as Williams’ ti but Doherty’s chaonship. Doherty also gained the nickname “ComeBacen”.

If anyone has any other comeback stories, feel free to keep them coming.

Again, thanks in advance.
