National Famine Commemoration Day

Postby Aislinn on Fri May 15, 2009 8:55 am

one of the events being organised to mark the National Famine Commemoration Day on Sunday 17th May is a ceremony, organised under the auspices of the Lord Mayor’s office, in St Joseph’smetery (site of unmarked Famine mass grave, holding upwards of 10,000 bodies), off the Tory Top road (http://www.corkcity.ie/maps/maps/43.html). The ceremony begins at 3.30pm, with a (provisional) programme as follows:

Introduction by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Brian Bermingham
Ecumenical service and prayers for the victims of the Famine
Laying of wreath
Friendship singers with a selection of hymns
Keynote speech of Dr Gillian Doherty, Department of History, UCC
Salute by the ‘Par histcal re-enactment group
Blessing and playing of the ‘Last Po
Final hyand National Anthem

I believe that all welcome to attend.

Hi all, Pardon me but just wondering what ACW connection is with famine..apart from emigrants going on in later life to fight in it they were two separate events in two separate places and two different times..just curious. Anyway, hope it went well.
