I always thought there was something out of place with the sinking of the Lusitania, didn't fit in with the whole gentlemenly war that was still the ideal in 1915, but who knows what really happened, did the germans know the cargo or did they just claim it was a military target after the fact?

on another note, wrecks like the Lusitania always get headlines, and the majority of people have heard of it, but who ever hears about the Wilhelm Gustloff, sunk by russian torpedoes in 1945 with the loss of around 9000 lives mostly refugees and civilians, making it the worst maritime disaster ever

looks like a certain navy from a neighbouring former empire tried to depth charge the wreck in the fifties as well. Some say it was to remove cover for hiding German U Boats. Conspiracy theories like the idea of destroying evidence. Curious stuff.

The Lusitania was a legitimate target, un-restricted U-Boat warfare had been declared prior to the sinking, those on board had been fully informed of the dangers of going into a war zone. there is some speculation that she was carring arms ans ammunition to the allied powers and this can not be fully dis-counted, the U-Boat that sank her had been given supplies by fishermen off Cape Clear before sinking her and a telegram that was sent warning of a U-Boat in the area was never recieed by the captain of the Lusitania.

Marcus, check out the article that started the post - the Lusitania was a weapons transport; they've found the actual weapons on the wreck.
