Female underwear

Postby Celtic Britain on Tue Feb 10, 2009 7:45 pm

Hi,

perhaps a stupid question, but what would wear a rich female of about 1300 in Ireland / Scottish isles as underwear? And I especially mean as a kind of bra or something. Or does anyone have a recommendation how it will look authentic under a dress?

Thanks in advance.

Beth says : "Nope! Nadda! Girlie go commando!"

Think you'll have to let on it's the '70s under your costume or something.

It's...contraversial;

and the counter argument;

Personally, I think they authentic way is to wear them around your knees, as far as I can tell.

That would be a Viking find and it mentions they were made of metal, hardly comfortable.

Celtic Britain specified 1300's. Beth says that as far as she can remember none of the imagery from that time shows any underwear, plenty of naked breasts but no signs of anything to put them in :P
We wouldn't put it past some women to cross and/or under strap themselves to provide support. Big girls can suffer some discomfort without something. We're not aware of any evidence to support that.

I've been looking about and if you go to

http://www.dragonbear.com/strutt.html

there is a list of plates from the 14th Cen and all the girls are featured as very flat. There is a suggestion of breast in natural state in the images of ladies in their chambers and on the toilet but no where else. If they have support it's binding and flattening to avoid highlighting the lady bumps. In the shots where neck and shoulder is exposed there is nowhere to hide around neck or off the shoulder under garments or strapping.

I would also suggest looking at livinghistory.co.uk in the costume section - I know that the topic has come up several times.
