Pommels

Postby Celtic Britain on Sun Dec 07, 2008 8:47 pm

Hello everybody,

could someone tell me how to recognise the land in which a sword was made by the pommel? I know the Irish pommel, but you also have diamond shaped pommels and flowerlike pommels. Or could you give me a link in which different types of pommels are explained?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Best thing to do is Google for the Oakeshotte typeology of swords. He goes through the different pommels & blade types, check out the wonderful book 'An archelogy of weapons' for more details. You can get it fairly cheap secondhand on Amazon.
