Viking-age baretta

Postby guthroth on Fri Jun 06, 2008 9:44 am

Hi

Some years ago I was in the NMI and in their Viking section they had a leather artifact which we took to be a VA Baretta (Hair fixer with pin).

It wasn't labelled very well, and I didn't take a photo of it. Is there any chance (if it's still on display) someone could get me some more information on it please ? At the time I drew a sketch of it which is here -

If possible I would like a photo plus an idea of what size it is.

Yours in hope,

Pete - Guthroth

Ooh yes I would be interested in this too. I believe Roisin mentioned barettas to me during our talk at Battle of the Ancients on female Viking kit. Wouldn't it be great to know that the leather one I picked up in Inverness could be used as kit? :)

The item is labelled (probably incorrectly...) as a sling for throwing stones but it looks a whole lot to me like a hairpiece.

I think one of the Viking Dublin leather books has a piece on this...stay tuned...

I have seen that and I saw a bone version some where too. All my books are still parked from my move last month. I think it was in one of my Irish art books.
