Hello everyone

Hi guys,
My name's Dave Neville and I'm from Cork.
Was involved in UCC's MedRen society back a few years ago and after a hiatus of about two years, I find myself being lured back into reenacting. I would like to officially blame Brendan Halpin and the nefarious Pajo for this

History is a passion, and that's what my BA is in. Of special interest is medieval history, though sadly I'm rather rusty and am getting my Fulcher of Chartres mixed up with my Gesta Francorums lately ;) I'm lucky to know so many archaeologists to guide me on the important details and finer points, but hopefully I can contribute in some way myself. I noticed Ian Hollingsworth's ancient thread about 'On this Day' so I might poke around there at some point.

Looking forward to getting to know you all, and to the conversations we'll no doubt enjoy about our shared passion.

Thanks lads!

@Brendan- I've actually encountered your good self before at Flags through MedRen, always a pleasure.
I'm unfortunately easily distracted by all manner of history, currently writing on Irish peacekeepers in Lebanon in 1980 (due Friday! eep! :) ) but my main interest would be medieval history, particular the high medieval period and the Angevin kings of England. The Cambro-Norman invasion of Ireland has always been of interest, but it's been far too long since I've done any reading on either.

I know it's rather predictable, but knights have always been an alluring topic for me, although I'm well aware the few in Ireland had little opportunity to engage in the couched lance charges of European war.
As a way of getting back into things as regards reenacting I'm reading Swords and Swordsmen by Mike Loades. While not a strictly academic study, the depth of knowledge and experience of the man comes through every page.

Not sure if I know that book...nothing wrong with Knights though. At the end of the day we do this for fun! :) ...and some academic texts can be a bit turgid and will sapping

Roman history was always a favourite of mine. If you don't know the basics about Rome's civilisation, it's very hard to understand the culture of Christian Europe that followed. Caught the Roman reenactors at the Cork City Gaol and was very impressed, indeed.

@Brendan- it's only been published in the last year or so. And yes, I know all about turgid texts. Dear Lord.... Some of them would be enough to put you off history altogether. Then you read something like Gerald of Wales that basically gives you a middle finger and you dive back in again.

Salve Dave!

Yep, that was us. Was it this year or last year you were at the Gaol show?

This year. I've actually met you and your lads numerous times through MedRen. Always good to see groups doing well.
