early irish shields

Postby the_power on Mon Nov 01, 2010 3:25 pm

Hey all. I'm thinking of getting some small shields made up, that I could use for 13thC sword & buckler, as well as early-irish use.

But..I'm concerned. I don't think I can/should try make shields that'll do both. I've got a lovely buckler that I'm selling for €50 - http://picasaweb.google.com/john.looney ... 9675939698 - that has a 130mm wide boss. I find it a little tight on my hand - I can't comfortably use it for sword & buckler work. Hence I'm replacing it with a slightly larger boss.

As far as I can tell, Irish shield bosses were quite small - you can't get your whole hand in normally - I assum they were made in such a size so you could hold a spear in your shield hand.

Sounds like I need to make a shield for each 'usage type', don't I ?

I have small buckler sized shields with full fist bosses ready to assemble. I intended to use for ECE and also to train with Brendan in an i33 context (though have now lost playmate to the lure of the big smoke again).

I'd say hang the boss authenticity for field combat but have at least one correct one for close up and posing with.
