July 11th - Opening of Spike Island!

Postby Aodhán on Tue May 04, 2010 4:35 pm

Hello everyone!

On July the 11th, Spike Island, Cork is going to be officially opened as a tourist attraction! To celebrate, there's going to be a festival in Cobh on that date, going on all day and, as a part of this, we at the Medieval and Renaissance society have been asked to come up with some ideas for this fair. To this end, we've decided we'd like to try and have a medieval festival there that day, in the midst of everything else!

Most important to how good an event turns out to be has been people, particularly numbers of people who can make it down! We'd like to have as many reenactors as possible at the day, as well as any living history displays they'd like to bring, any traders who'd like to attend and peddle their wares, as well as some specialised areas such as perhaps a birds of prey show.

Right now we're in the process of figuring out just how much we have to work with but if people could please try and keep this date free that would be fantastic. Our plans for now would be to feed everyone who participated and to compensate their expenses. However, I must emphasise, this is not finalised and depends on how much of a budget we receieve. While I'd like to guarantee a lucrative payment for all that would be lying. I think it is likely we should be able to do at least as much as I'd said though.

Our plans over all would include living history displays all day, possibly an area to hold mini-shows and talks in, or if people just want to fight one another, that'd be the place. As well, we're tying to find out if there'll be a place we could hold a 'battle' for ourselves between whoever shows up. If possible, we'd also like to run an archery competition and most of all, hope everyone has a good time!

Of course, considering the rich history of the island, almost all time-periods are welcome. I said Medieval show but really it's history we're looking for! Anything from early Irish to WW2 reenactors would be welcome to participate.

Hope you can attend!

Salve Aodhan!

Sounds fantastic! We'll certainly support you on the day. Do you know if there will be space to set up a full Roman encampment?

We're trying to find out exactly how much space we have to work with, but I certainly hope so. I should know in two weeks just what will be available. Cobh's big enough though, hopefully we'll be able to accomodate you.

July the 11th eh??? (Anniversary of the Anglo Irish truce 1921!) - im looking forward to visiting.

I wrote to Cork Council who manage the some time ago offering to give them detailed information, photographs etc from my research about the Islands role as an internment camp in the War of Independence. Im still waiting to hear back. The island has a great story in the 1916 -21 period - The German marines from the Aud were held there at Easter 1916, Thomas Malone and two others IRA Volunteers escaped from there, IRA Captain Patrick white from Clare was shot dead by a sentry on Spike Island in July 1921. Sadly all this was left out of a recently book published about the islands history - so I hope it will not be left out of the display & information pannells, the museum guided tour and leaflets at the new tourist site.

Any way that point aside - best of luck to all those who will be participating in the Medieval Festival in Cobh. Hope it goes well for ye Aodhan

ATTENTION ALL INTERESTED IN ATTENDING, THE EVENT IS CANCELLED.

I've been emailing back and forth with our correspondent, trying to confirm whether or not it would be going ahead and whether we'd have money for people's expenses or not. I've been informed that there will not be space for a reenactment.

Sorry to only be able to tell you this now.

Aodhan.
