Brass Wire, 1-1.5mm

Postby Ger Fitzpatrick on Fri Jan 15, 2010 6:15 pm

Hi,

Can anyone tell me where I could buy some brass wire, 1-1.5mm. Its for the trim on a mail standard. I've had a look around town (Dublin) but haven't found anything suitable. The closet I found was gold plated copper wire, but that was prohibitively expensive, 6e for 1m or something like that.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Cheers,
Ger

I have some 1 metre phosphor bronze t.i.g welding rods that are very soft. They are 2.5mm, any use?. If you know any Oxy Acetylene welders, they will have brass brazing rods in 1mm or 1.5mm which will be quite cheap. I have 2.5 in aluminium and 1.5 in stainless, any use?
Regards.
Tom.

Tom,
I think 2.5mm would be too thick for what I require. Thanks for the info on the Oxy Acetylene welding rods, I'll look into that.

Cheers,

Salve Ger,

You need to go to a good fishing shop. Basically any decent fishing shop with a selection of fly tying materials will send brass wire. 1.5mm might be pushing it but you'd never know.

Healy Metals in Dublin do Bronze Welding Rods in a few sizes, which is a more authentic metal again.

Marks Models located at Hawkins Street in Dublin do brass wire in very fine diameters. Joe Saleh's branch of the same shop in Cork may well supply the same stuff too.

Salve Ger,

Heres a crowd in the UK I've bought wire from before for fly tying.

http://wires.co.uk/acatalog/brass.html

The problem you are going to have though is that most commersially available brass wire or rod is fully or semi annealed. This means it's going to be fairly soft and easily bent. You'd have to harden it when finished, still easily enough done (read down the web page)

http://chestofbooks.com/crafts/machinery/Shop-Practice-V1/Hardening-And-Annealing-Brass.html

It's important to remember though that brass cannot be fully hardened by thermal means alone. Your probably better off going with what Billy has proposed.

Cheers
