Im on the hunt for flax in its raw state.

Rhetted or ready for spinning.

Any ideas of where to get it from?

Grow it?!
The Irish Seed Savers Association may have some in stock....well, they had 22 on file when I asked. The 4 varieties they gave me didn't really take off well but that may have been the soil type, wet summer or old seed.

...So, did you find that 'Make a bow string from a square foot of flax' article as well?

Will give that a go.

Already make all my bowstrings from irish linen thread.

The raw flax is for bow backing, its an alterative to using sinew.

I recently go some from Wingham Wool Works in the UK. http://www.winghamwoolwork.co.uk/fbr_vegetable.php. They have a great range of natural fibres, and have a lot of Irish customers too. Postage is the usual pain, almost same price to post as to buy but their fibre is good. I got the flax tops which is cut into 1 meter lengths. A German friend of mine who spins flax all the time says its rare to get it cut at these lengths and its a good find. She now gets her flax from there too!

http://www.etsy.com is another good place for sourcing smaller amounts of fibre.
