The Finds Research Group AD700 – 1700

Saturday 24th October 2009
The Collection, Lincoln LN2 1LP

The conference is intended to be an introduction to iron and cover both how it was made between AD 700-1700 and how the various properties of the different irons produced were used, both functionally and decoratively.

Speakers to include Eleanor Blakelock, Peter King, Gerry McDonnell, Sarah Paynter and Dave Starley. During a long lunch break we intend to show a short film of Jake Keen undertaking a smelt in a bloomery furnace; have a smithing demonstration by Hector Cole using his reconstruction of a portable medieval hearth (possibly smithing iron from a bloom produced by Jake); an exhibition of pattern welded swords and spears made by Hector; and an exhibition of xrays and iron objects from the Lincoln Museum collection. Posters are welcome.

The meeting is free for FRG members but will cost £5 for non-members.
Booking forms will be available from the FRG website (
