Good movies

Postby Amhran Nua on Wed Jul 22, 2009 10:08 am

Not sure if theres already a thread for this, but I happened across the 1985 film "Flesh and blood" the last day with Rutger Hauer, which despite its array of unsavoury characters and deeds is a very enjoyable medieval period film. Mercenaries, plague, corrupt lords and double dealing generals, its all in there. Hauer has done at least one other similar move, "Ladyhawk", more for the younger audience but still fascinating. Another recommended flick in the collection is "Brotherhood of the wolf", a late medieval whodunnit which doesn't pull any punches in terms of action.

Are there any similar movies out there, or recommended films which might not have made the mainstream (everyone knows about Braveheart :D )? I have vague recollections of seeing a movie with vikings throwing axes at a castle gate, and using those as a ladder to scale the wall, and one craggy looking gent (Kirk Douglas?) walking on the oars to get to shore, can't for the life of me recall the name now though.

Edit oh yes and of course the Name of the Rose, another great one.

I came across one of Rutger Hauer very early films called "Soldiers of Orange" the other day. I think it's one of Paul Verhoeven's ( Robocop, Total Recall, Hollow Man, Starship Troopers) very early films too. This was about the Dutch resistance. I'd recommend anyone watch this movie, it's dutch and subtitled but still very enjoyable and accurate.

That would make sense! :D

Also good TV series, there was one called Robin the Hooded man from the 80s as well, excellently done and lots of detail. I'd love to see a seafaring movie from the age of the cog and galley as well, or even late Roman empire period, if there are any around.

Kingdom of heaven? hell yea. I enjoyed the 13th warrior aswell, I thought it was an enjoyable flick but for some reason film buffs hate it.

Watch "seven samurai", then watch "13th warrior". It's a scene for scene remake, they rarely even changed the dialogue.
