Veere 2009

Postby lordedward on Wed Jul 15, 2009 6:46 pm

We're back,

Having arrived back from Holland yesterday I've had a chance to get some of the pictures of this event together but there are many more to come as this was very well covered in the media.

Veere is a lovely town dating back to the 1500's and retains much of its seaward defenses making it ideal to stage an amphibious landing to mark the bicentennial of the British landings on the island of Walcheren in a bid to take Antwerp.

Highlights

The lovely Eva teaching us to row a boat on Friday

Ending up in the only boat with a cannon for the two battles

ignoring my divisional co to stay with the KGL cannon on Sunday

Having the 86th charge across the narrow scaffold bridge and up the hill at the far end prompting my divisional co to say "Those Irish are bloody fearless"

Being the only person wearing an orange sash on the 12th of July in Holland and marching into battle.

Tea with the Sea scouts and Patrick fro the Dutch Grenadiers.

Teaching the British Army Hurling

Inventing the Left/Right Wheel in the middle of a parade for Prince Wilhelm Alexander of the Neterlands

What would lads from kildare and dublin know about hurling 8-)
"The Kaiser knows the Munsters,
by the Shamrock on their caps,
And the famous Bengal Tiger, ever ready for a scrap,
And all his big battalions, Prussian Guards and grenadiers,
Fear to face the flashing bayonets of the Munster Fusiliers."

Go bua
