Charles Fort

Postby museumtom on Sat Sep 12, 2009 5:15 pm

Hello all.
I was in Charles Fort (Kinsale) today, beautiful location, perfect weather and splendid show. There is militaria there and any amount of guns you might want to handle. There WAS re-enactment there, I was just expecting living history. I had to leave after the Romans did a show. That was followed by the Pards, American Civil war battle. There was to be Black and tans and Volunteers in a fire fight and the Germans and Brits were to fight each other but I had to leave so it went on in my absence. It all happening again tommorrow. It costs 4 smackers a head and a tenner for a family. The place is a perfect place for kids to explore but keep an eye on them and keep out of the restricted areas. I am uploading photos and a bit of video for ye and will add them when it is done. When the weather is as good as it is now you have to go there. take a tip from an old codger, if you are going put a half bottle of fizzy water in the freezer, take it with you in the morning and you will have a cold drink all day as it melts. And if you don't want it the re-enactors will pay you anything for it. All displays were brilliant and every went home alive, what more could you ask? except Dave Levins to be shot, which he was just before I left. A perfect end to a perfect day.
Now then I am off for a pint, all that sea air type of thing.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the report on Charles Fort and the brilliant photos.
Unfortunately, THERE WAS an admission charge which was decided upon by OPW in Dublin, Ballina and East Cork(who all have a say in how Charles Fort is run). We, in The Pards had been advertising it as a "Free Gig" and were only notified about the admission charge last Friday, September 11. !!!

Thanks again
God Bless Dixie,

it looks like my tunic is eating me 8-)
"The Kaiser knows the Munsters,
by the Shamrock on their caps,
And the famous Bengal Tiger, ever ready for a scrap,
And all his big battalions, Prussian Guards and grenadiers,
Fear to face the flashing bayonets of the Munster Fusiliers."

Go bua

was a great laugh down there alright, tho I had to miss the 2nd day due to being a tad under the weather.... :( Real pity about the admission thing, typical paper pusher crap... grr... Still, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves!
