Irish Leather Helmet MK4

Hey, this is the fourth attempt at an 'early period' Irish helmet. I've little to go on, so design considerations are as follows:

* Safe for light combat
* Light for fast combat
* Looks 'old'
* Made with materials available to average soldiers from 500AD to 1600AD
* Usable without an arming cap or chin-strap - wool lined

It takes some inspiration from the 16thC Irish helmets that we don't know are metal or leather, and a 17thC polish helmet that Finn was so kind to send on. It's a 'first draft', so comments for changes are welcome before I start 'mass producing' it.

Uh...not sure. They are about 4 hours work + 25euro of leather and 15euro of steel. Maybe 110 or so. This one is the first one, so it'll go cheaper

i know of the first one , the second i am not familar wth , must take some photos of my chain mail and weapons and tunic some time and place in gallery , john how do i place photos on as i would like to place articles and photos up . thanks

Well, you seem to have no problems with the 'photo albums' bit..for embedding photos in 'normal posts', just head down the bottom to 'upload attachment'. You can click the 'view inline' button to show the photo in the post itself. You likely should keep them small - bigger than 400x700 they get scrollbars.

the impression I get from helmets is that the metal bands were attached to the leather in most, if not all, instances. Otherwise it would have far less strength. Is there any way you could attach the leather panels? might I suggest rivets. Small copper or steel rivets (the solid kind, not hollow or pop rivets) would do the job a treat.

Actually, I see on closer inspection that you did use some copper rivets.
My suggestion is to rivet the leather to all the metal bands, from top to bottom, and around the rim too. It eliminates the need for stitching.

Ed English has a cracking helmet that's made from leather panels riveted to a metal frame.
Can't remember who made it. Might have been Pete Seymour, but maybe not.
