Types of Chainmail

I'm familiar with one-in-four mail (one central link connected to 4 adjacent links) but I've heard of one in eight Does this actuallt exist? Does anybody out there know of the various mail types?

Also, is there any evidence for the use of 'butted' mail being used for anything other than re-enactment?

it's the last word on mail research. But yes, butted mail did exist (though rare). 8-in-1 did exist, AKA King's Mail, but it's likely a decorative effect, as the links need to be big, and it's not very flexible.

There is the theory that Kings Mail was literally just that. Early Kevlar for the King so he was ultra safe whilst watching his men fight and die for him. As King he wouldn't really need to fight for himself, that's what minions were for.
