Niall,

I just started "Galloglas: Hebridean and West Highland Mercenary Kindreds in Medieval Ireland", and it is proving to be an interesting read so far. I did not realize when I bought it that it is a series of lectures by different speakers. Quite a few experts have presented the chapters.

Book Review: The World of the Gallowglass

I did finnish this book a few months ago and had been meaning to do a review, but have been extremely busy.

Sean Duffy's introduction to this series of lectures is excellant! Unfortunately, the next several chapters have nothing to do with gallowglas at all. The following chapters, especially "Having the right kit" are applicable, but fell short of what I had hoped for. The last chapters, once again, deal with Scotish history and have little to do with the gallowglass.

Overall, I was dissapointed with this book and the series of lectures. The title is missleading. Half of the book deals with Scotish history, without relating it to Irish history. The presentation on "Having the Right kit" had so much potential, but the presentor/author did not explore all the possible resources. I do recomend this volume, with the caveat that it is certainly not the "end all, be all" of information on gallowglass.

Here's an interesting one...

Anglo-Irish and Gaelic marriage laws and traditions in late medieval Ireland
Journal of Medieval History, Volume 32, Issue 1, March 2006, Pages 27-42
Gillian Kenny

It's not freely available without a university student account or that, but if anyone wants it, pm me and I'll gmail it their way!

Thanks for the other articles too by the way Niall! Any idea where I'd get a concrete reference (journal, book or other publication) for the first one on the hobelar?
