Charles asked Johannes (famous 9thC Irish philospher) "What's the difference between an Irishman and a Drunkard". Irishman=Scottum, Drunkard=sottum. You can see the joke Charles was trying to make. When Johannes replied "The table", he was basically saying that Charles was a drunk, while answering his question.
