This has been around for a while and was posted on the old board. It is one of the best podcasts you are likely to come across

http://www.anders.com/lectures/lars_brownworth/12_byzantine_rulers/

It delivers history as a really interesting story and gives a feel for all the characters involved while being factually accurate.

They would have called themself ROMANS. The term Byzantine is a medivel add on because all of europe (The state of Venice) wanted all the money because they were sitting on the richest trade route to the east so the term Byzantine was slaped on them to imply they were not European 8-)

er, yeah, but I wanted to show that I could spell Byzantine :)
And besides, it is common enough in reputable history books to refer to the Eastern Romans (or Greeks as they were also later known) as Byzantine. (I refer specifically to "The Byzantine Commonwealth" by Dimitri Obololensky which is a really good cultural/political history of the Empire)
..and this way everyone knows who I am talking about - "North West European Archipelageo" anyone?
