Hospitaller gear Question

Postby bonnacon on Mon Dec 07, 2009 3:43 am

Hi all,

I'm getting a late 12th early 13th century Hospitaller kit organised and I am trying to source everything that I am making. I have almost everything sourced except for the wearing of the Kappa/Robe over armour. I have seen it being used in lots of reenactors, but I haven't been able to find a contemporary picture of it being done or any written information about it.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated,

Jon

I presume you have started with the Osprey book - one of their better ones

For the Robe I made a fairly large sized Surcoat with an integral hood. Part of the problem I had is that I want to be able to wear it with a helmet so had to make the hood a bit super-sized.
In terms of fabric I used a black cloth I obtained from Bernie the bolt. It is fairly basic and not a pure black - very difficult to obtain those colours at that time

Not sure if that is of any help?

Hi Brendan,

What I am really looking for is an actual source for the wearing of the kappa over the armour. So far all that I have been able to get my hands onto is a third-hand source explaining it.

Thanks,

Jon
