Hello All.
I thought I'd introduce myself and failing to fine any link to do so - I'm using the new topic page - apologies if I'm in the wrong place.
I've always been interested in history and especially the archery side of things. I've managed to learn and acquitted myself well at my first (and only) All Ireland ITFAS Archery Champs - but was laid low by a carcrash. Things are getting better and now I've joined the Waterford Vikings to learn sword-craft and to take part in their re-enactments. As Waterford finally embraces it's Viking history I can only see good things to come. We had a visit by the current lord mayor (See Glenribbeen's FaceBook page for photos of the evening). I'm interested in the food, and culture too. Especially the food as I eat nothing else.
I already make stuff like Roman Army bread and some porridge-based bread - with honey and used to make old recipe beers, mead and melomeal - alas I can't get the cleaning agents anymore.
I hope to specialise in archery - I've an English war/long bow and 5 copies of medieval arrows and one very real broadhead. I'm currently trying to make some chainmail but it's tedious and very slow. Any ideas about buying stuff??
I already give talks/demonstrations at heritage days and folkfestivals, historical-themed weekends as they are now just beginning to take off now in Ireland. Any help/advice you have to give will be most welcome.

Greetings from Vaderfjord.

Peter O'Connor, Glenribbeen.

Salve Peter!

If you're ever interested in doing Roman re-enactment and combat then why not give Legion Ireland a go. You can find us at www.romanarmy.ie or 087-6780133. Lots of equipment and even artillery!

Vale,

Martin.

Thanks for the welcome lads - Salud.

I was at a meeting of the (new) Knockmealdowns Forum this morn and I believe there will be Very good news in the near future for re-enactment groups that can get a link (however tenuous) to West Waterford. Vikings are a given but anyone else ? I'll collect and put forward any details for any re-enactment 'scenes' that I can use in any of the many festivals in the area.
I wonder if I could swing it to have (for instance) Romans helping with seating and crowd-control at the Lismore Opera festival.

Any and all (reasonable) suggestions will be considered.

Peter

Peter,
welcome aboard! Sorry for not replying sooner!
There is a fairly wde range of reenactment going on in Ireland though it tends to have fashions. With Viking and Roman you have found two of the most popular. If you have an interest in any other specific period of history of history put something on here. I know there are some guys doing Medieval stuff around Kilkenny and later era stuff in county wexford ...I have to admit my knowledge of post gunpowder groups is somewhat shakey at best!
