SOLOHEADBEG 90TH ANNIVERSARY.

THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOLOHEADBEG AMBUSH COMMEMORATION TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY SUNDAY 25TH JAN. AT THE AMBUSH SITE . I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL THE REENACTORS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THIS YEARS COMMEMORATIONS. ALL FROM CORK, CLARE, KILKENNY, WICKLOW , KILDARE AND WEXFORD , ALL WHO DRESSED IN PERIOD COSTUMES I.E. FLYING COLUMN, IRISH VOLUNTEER, CUMANN NA mBan AND R.I C. THE VOLLEY OF SHOTS , THE MARCH AND THE PERIOD OF DRESS WAS REALLY APPRECIATED BY THE ORGANISERS AND ALL WHO ATTENDED THE CEREMONIES . THIS EVENT IS RECOGNISED AS THE START OF THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE.

Well done lads. A contentious event, but well worth remembering.


Incidentally, it's also the site of a much older, and equally important battle.

The battle of Sulchóid (Solohead) in 968, saw Brian Boru and his brother Mathgamhain defeat the Limerick Vikings under King Ivar. They burnt and looted the city after, and Mathgamhain was killed at a related peace accord meeting, allowing Brian to assume leadership. The rest, as they say, is history.

Significant place, old Soloheadbeg.
