Colouring Wood

I have a few identical wooden boxes (pine I think). I would like to paint/stain one to make it easily identifiable, preferably a green or a red colour. Can anyone tell me an authentic way to do this? I need it for Early Christian & later but would like the option to use it for earlier events if possible.
