Trebuchet use in Ireland

Postby ColmBruxelles on Tue Aug 21, 2012 10:46 pm

Hello all

Firs posting here so apologies in advance if this has been discussed elsewhere.

Is there any evidence of a trebuchet being used in the past in Ireland? I only discovered trebuchet two years ago while on holiday in France. sonce then I have built a few models - this is one which I made for my boys for their play mobil soldiers - it fires golf balls about 50 metres.

I have built a bigger version for my kids norman themed birthday party - again it fired water filled balloons abou 50-60 metres. I'll post pictures soon.

but back to original question - any idea if these trebuchet made it to Ireland during the Norman period

Thanks

Colm

Thanks for that. I found that thread before I posted my message. I understand that the project had come to a standstill and the last posting was some time ago. I got in touch with the National Museum today and had some positive results where I was told that there are reports of engineers repairing siege machines in a manuscript or two. I am to get more information regarding the manuscripts etc later.

I'll keep you posted on any more news.

Salve Colm,

Sean Shiels AKA Wolvine is the man behind the 'Siege Engine Company' and it's still very very much alive. If you want his details please PM me. I have a number of Roman Catapulta (bolt firing machines) siege artillery and finally hope to take possession of my first Ballista (stone firing machine) later this year, so if you like Roman artillery you know where to come ;-)

Hi Brendan.

I am still waiting on further news on funding which will decide how fast this project will take off. So I am keeping my powder dry and waiting for orders. When I know more I will put up a detailed post. Your support is most welcome Brendan as you well remember we spoke about this a good while back and it looks like we could be on the way!

Seán

PS. I will be working on the remainder of those shields Brendan this week so you might let me know what styles you need for the long shields.
