I used something similar in Tintagel a few years back, when I'd broken ribs, so couldn't lift a full size sword or shield - I just borrowed someone's blocking dagger and a buckler. It turned out to be surprisingly effective against inexperienced two handed spearmen.

Has anyone come across formal training documentation for use with such small blades ?

Ha! Try Vegetius aka Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus.

Seán, that looks magnificent. I'd say go for it!

Well done.

More recently I think that Meyer has some stuff on shorter weapons, but I could be incorrect on that

http://books.google.com/books?id=aPK7xjchZFUC&lpg=PR32 looks perfect. Loads about "only stab, don't slash", which is as expected.

Hey Sean,

I presume by now you have read those pdfs Dave Mooney sent you, and realised that the overall length of the longest Irish Iron Age sword was longer than I realised. Looks like you can make the blade a bit longer and still be authentic, like you wanted.

Best of luck with the whole thing.

Billy.
