Barry Rafferty's 'A Catalogue of Irish Iron Age Antiquities' should be a good one for info. I have access to it here, if you want some photocopies of the relevant pages and info?

Hi Amdrew, Jonathan, one of our Celtic lads has a copy of both volums, but do you know where I could by a copy?

Nope. As far as I know it is out of print. It is really hard to get a hold of a second hand copy of it.

Hi Billy.
Here is that pic on the ammended iron age blade. As you can see I extended the width of the pommel and reduced the length of the hilt. The over all length of the sword will be 20 inches, about one inch longer then the longest blade found in Ireland. I think I can get away with that . I see what you were saying about the blade being steady in the hand. With the combination of crossguard, hilt(3 and a half inches) and pommel the blade should be very snug in the hand. With the roundness of the crossguard and pommel it would be very comfortable also.
Fighting with a blade like this will require some investigation into its proper use. Its very much an 'up close' weapon which would also require the use of a much smaller shield. The combination of both would be deadly as I am sure pure speed would be needed with such weapons. Anyway Billy let me know what you think about the ammendments.

All the best Seán

Salve Omnes!

Salve Sean, when you look at the dimensions in your drawing it seems really small, but the actual finds are just like your drawing. As I've always said, our reproduction Gladii are too long. If you look at the actual eaxmples shown our our own website you see just how small they are, just like your Celtic blade. Excellent work!

Valete,

Greetings my friends.

Hi Martin. I reckon the design I have will do so the plan is to make a template for the blade, I have some large antler I can use for the crossguard, hilt and pommel. I will put in an order for the Gladii and Celtic blades together and the order will go out next week. I can't wait to see how fast those celtic blades are

Sean, any idea how much they'd end up costing ? I'm mildly interested in something like this, I'm sure a number of our group might be.

But yeah, you could see how a short spear would suddenly be a lot more useful, if you are fighting guys with cute stubby swords...

Greetings my friends.

Hi John. The blades (without crossguard, hilt and pommel)would be between £60 and £70 from Armourclass, They don't make the guard, hilt, pommel fittings for these types of sword. This may a good thing as you could custom the hilt etc. to suit your grip. I will have more information early next week when I am talking to the lads from Armourclass.

Sounds cool. I'd love the chance to make our own furniture.
