Question for the Monasterevin Leinsters

Hello Leinsters.
During my ramblings through the ww1 papers I came across a reference to a particular Battalion of the Leinsters ( the article was discarded at the time as it was not relevant ) that was made up of itinerants. Do you have any knowledge of such a battalion, as far as I remember it was the fourth and was also known as the Queens County Militia.

hello tom,thanks for an amazing post,
i was at the cinema in portlaoise today with the kids, and the monument to all the leinsters,
their names rank and serial number along with the battilionthey served in is just 50 yards away.
then i come home and read this after spending some time there showing the kids there great grand uncles name.
there is a plaque on each of the 4 panels and you are right the 4th battilion was the queens county (laois) ,militia.
ill go over tomorrow and take names and numbers see what comes up, but thats an amazing story thanks for sharing.

i can hear them now " Them monasterevin lads sure there a bunch of knac***s :lol: :lol: :lol:

Good man Mock. It would be interesting to find out if the Travellers in your area have a historian that might be able to shed some light on it.

Hi Tom,

My Great Uncle did his training with the 4th Battalion before moving on to the 2nd. He was killed at Hooge Crater. I don't know of any Traveller connection...other than Mocks suggestion :D

There is of course a long tradition among some Traveler families of joining the Irish Guards.
