Elizabeth Fort Museum Official Opening

Situated in Elizabeth fort on Barracks street, the Elizabeth Fort Museum is a new initiative set up to bring history to life in one of Cork city’s historical gems. The museum will initially be opened on week ends and will be staffed by volunteers. The museum will feature a number of permanent displays explaining the development of the city from its Hiberno-Norse origins up to the present day. Unlike traditional museums this will be a full living history experience. Displays will consist not only of fixed presentations but also re-enactors in full period costume living and working in the period.

The museum will officially open on the May bank holiday week end (1st and 2nd of May) from 11am to 4:30pm each day. There will be re-enactors from the 1st to the 19th century’s with accompanying displays. There will be full 10th Century Hiberno-Norse and 12th century Anglo-Norman living history encampments. In addition to this there will be demonstrations of ancient arms and combat with regular tours of key historical sites for the public. Both the museum and the event are free to the public so why not come along and enjoy a fantastic family event.

The museum is open to other groups who wish to run interactive events or exhibitions. A series of historically themed events are being organised for other week-ends throughout the season and we will post details of them here when finalised.
